During a Kiwi Winch Challenge event held in 2005, competitors burnt out a total of 24 Warn 6HP Winch motors over the course of the event. This led a couple of bright spark Kiwis to look into developing a new winch motor which covered all of the below requirements:
-More torque, higher rpm, more reliability -Longer duty cycle capability for extreme long winch sections -Tighter armature to brush clearances with increased contact area for higher efficiency -Same or smaller dimensions than a warn 6hp -Bolted and welded field connections for super reliability -Serviceable brushes and steel holder -Tough anti-corrosive outer finish -Expoxy dipped armature for increased winding integrity
What they came up with was the SuperDuty 7.8 HP winch motor in 12v and 24v configuration sourced from a US supplier. Since the first run of these motors, in 3.5yrs of use in NZ winch challenge events there has not been one single armature failure. An awesome feat considering the abuse that these motors receive in competition style use.
When installing one of these winch motors it is good practice to fit the motor and then remove the back cover and check for armature alignment on the brushes. This alignment is usually different for every winch and to get correct alignment the supplied spacers can be used to get 100% contact with the brushes to get the best performance out of your 7.8 hp motor.
They also deserve excellent current from your vehicles electrical system and this means making sure each and every one of your winch and battery terminals is clean, tight and solid, and you are running a minimum 650cca or dual battery system with both batteries driving your winch. Not many aftermarket Dual battery controllers can do this except for the RedArc Dual battery solenoid which we have in our ebay shop. Bad connections could lead to a burnt out motor and void warranty.
